Lemon Crumble Muffins from Ben.Oven: A Fresh, Healthy, and Filling Treat

With the slew of bakers selling their products online, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by their sheer number, and honestly, there are moments that I find them selling almost the same thing. Which is why Ben.Oven has caught my attention, as they veered away from the usual flavors, and came up with Lemon Crumble Muffins for the month of July! They have also previously launched other interesting treats. These include their Pineapple Carrot Cupcake, and something closer to the classics, Dark Chocolate Chip Cookies.

THE STORY

Ms. Bea has always been a huge fan of pastries. When she was still a kid, her mom would make some freshly baked goodies during Christmas, such as Carrot Cake and Fruit Cake. She fondly remembers how her dad became her mom’s #1 supporter on her humble baking venture years back. However, as years passed by, her mom stopped selling her baked goodies. During this community quarantine, Ms. Bea got a bright idea to re-create the memories she so fondly cherished — in memory of her late father.

Ben.Oven is named after her father (Benjamin), reminiscing the love and support her dad has shown for her mother’s baking business. As she is a self-confessed daddy’s girl, she hopes this passion project will be gazed upon by her father, proud of her for recreating and reviving this decades-old family business.

So with the happy memories in tow, they decided to turn up the heat on their oven and started baking again. Despite having full-time jobs, they have successfully launched this project: handling everything from social media management, to baking, to public relations — all together as a family.

THE FOOD

This July, they have launched their Lemon Crumble Muffins, and as they say, it’s fresh from Ben.Oven! A unique flavor from the usual, this fresh take is definitely something to watch out for. These lovelies are packed in a minimalist white box, that’s sturdy enough to endure shipping, and classy enough for gifting. They come in half a dozen per order, and retails for Php 270.

When my box of muffins got delivered, I immediately noticed that they were a bit heavy. I got excited because it’s seldom that I find really filling (but not cloying) cupcakes or muffins. Once I opened the box, I was greeted with a whiff of freshness that definitely made my mouth water. As I sank my teeth into a piece of this freshly baked muffin, I instantly fell in love.

THE VERDICT

The lemon crumb topping was a perfect balance of tangy and sweet. It had a distinct freshness that can only come from freshly squeezed lemons. On the other hand, the lemon muffins were packed yet soft. This citrusy treat is definitely unique, and is perfect for those who are already tired of the usual flavors. I enjoyed how each bite is filled with freshness, so much so that I did not feel an ounce of guilt for downing a piece in less than five minutes.

Eating a piece of muffin will already keep you fueled for a couple of hours: don’t underestimate how well it will fill you up. You may pair it with coffee or tea, or just eat it on the go. It may be a bit messy to eat because of the crumbs but it’s all worth it! Ultimately, the Lemon Crumble Muffins from Ben.Oven will definitely brighten up your day: it’s yellow outer appearance would surely bring a smile to your face, and the amply sweet lemony goodness will make your tummy happy. Highly recommended for people willing to try something new!
